The Department of Chemical Engineering at Hanyang University was established in 1948, and the Department has successfully carried out the Brain Korea 21 projects from the first stage in 1999 to the present, with which the Department has been actively engaged in the provision of high-quality education program for graduate students as well as internationally-leading research activities. “Hanyang Education & Research Center for Frontier Energy Materials” has been selected in the 4th stage of Brain Korea 21 project in 2020, which allows to establish a platform for executing cutting-edge research and nurturing experts in the field of advanced energy materials and systems.

Although the importance of energy materials is increasing in these days, due to changes in industrial environment, there is a considerable shortage of top-level researchers and engineers for the area of advanced energy materials. For achieving innovative economic growth and technology development in the frontier energy industry, it is very urgent to have an education program for the specialist in the frontier energy materials and its application. Therefore, with the motto of “HYPOWER (HanYang Professional Outstanding World-leading Energy-material Researcher)”, the center aims to cultivate high-tech energy material researchers and engineers who can lead new energy industries and become one of world leaders. Innovation strategy of Hanyang University under the new era of 4th industrial Revolution focuses on connection of education with the society, sustainable and multidisciplinary research, and the creation of student values. In accordance with university’s innovation strategy, the implementation of our vision to our program is made by three strategies, namely, 1) improving problem-solving skills through hyper-connected education, 2) cultivating convergence thinking through hyper-convergence research, and 3) constructing advanced education systems to create students’ value.

In order to facilitate in-depth and effective education for frontier energy materials researchers, the center strategically has introduced novel teaching courses, including IC-PBL (Industry-Coupled Problem-Based Learning), creative self-directed research, and subjects for gaining global-leading expertise and research capabilities. In addition, an industry-academic cooperation framework is set up within the center by establishing “HY POWER 119”. This cooperative network supports companies to be readily linked with expertise, Know-Hows and facilities available within the center, and allows to communicate the center with from large corporations to small-to-medium companies through on-line/telephonic discussion in short-term, face-to-face meetings in mid-term, and industrial projects in the long term.

We will lead the discovery of new energy industry and its development for achieving high economic growth through the training of top-level manpower in the area of frontier energy materials, by fully incorporating over the last 20 years of experiences and infrastructure for the education and research related to energy research with this 4th stage of Brain Korea 21 project.
