Welcome to the website of the “Hanyang Education & Research Center for Advanced Materials toward Carbon Neutrality.”
The Department of Chemical Engineering at Hanyang University, founded in 1948, has played a leading role in advancing science, technology, and industry both domestically and globally for over half a century. Since the inception of the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) initiative in 1999, the department has continuously built a world-class research and education infrastructure. Building on this strong foundation, the department was selected in 2020 as part of the 4th phase of the BK21 program, initially launching the “Hanyang Education & Research Center for Frontier Energy Materials” and later being reselected and restructured as the “Hanyang Education & Research Center for Advanced Materials toward Carbon Neutrality”, thereby marking a new beginning in educational and research excellence.
Responding to the climate crisis and achieving a sustainable industrial transformation are no longer options—they are necessities. Among the various technological enablers, advanced materials play a pivotal role in realizing a carbon-neutral society. Despite a growing demand for highly trained experts in this field, the current education and research systems remain insufficient. To meet this critical need, our center is committed to cultivating global leaders with advanced technological expertise and interdisciplinary thinking through our vision, HY-POWER (Hanyang Professional Outstanding World-leading Emerging-material Researcher).
Our center serves as a hyper-converged platform that integrates education, research, industry, and society. We aim to systematically nurture talents equipped with creative problem-solving abilities, practical industrial skills, and strong global research competitiveness. Our core strategic initiatives include:
Development of specialized curricula focused on carbon-neutral emerging materials and expansion of practical training aligned with industry needs
Introduction of IC-PBL+ and QBL-based problem-solving education models, along with AI- and data-driven convergence learning programs
Implementation of global research capacity-building programs, including international internships, joint research, and global workshops
Establishment of practical industry-academia cooperation systems such as HY-POWER 119, HY-LIGHT, and HY-4D
Enhancement of advanced research infrastructure, including the HY-FIVE Open Lab and the HY-CDP (Career Development Platform)
Benchmarking globally renowned institutions and grounded in an in-depth SWOT analysis, our center has established three core innovation strategies—Education, Research, and Convergence—and twelve actionable sub-strategies. Through this framework, we aim to elevate our graduate program to the global top 30 by 2030, while driving the growth of new carbon-neutral industries through convergence-based innovation.
Our center pursues a value-creating education model that transcends traditional academia-industry boundaries. By establishing a hyper-connected ecosystem between universities, local communities, industries, and international partners, we foster interdisciplinary, solution-oriented education tailored to address real-world challenges. Through this approach, we are continuously producing high-impact global talents capable of strengthening energy security, enhancing industrial competitiveness, and contributing to a carbon-neutral future.
We kindly ask for your continued interest and support in the endeavors of our center as we strive to nurture the next generation of leaders driving a sustainable future.
Thank you.
